Turning data into management insight

Data creates value when it becomes meaningful in the context of the decisions it is intended to support.

Context

Senior management and the Sales function needed an information layer that made data more accessible and useful for interpreting business performance.

The aim was not to produce more reports for their own sake, but to organise information around the questions and priorities of the people using it.

Responsibility

I built a Power BI system for senior management and the Sales function, connecting information needs, data availability and the way users would access and interpret the output.

Decisions and coordination

The design started with the intended use of the information. Data structure and presentation were therefore treated as parts of the same challenge: making the information required for monitoring and decision-making clear.

Ongoing dialogue with the intended users kept the work anchored in its business context and prevented the solution from becoming a purely technical exercise.

Outcome

The Business Intelligence system was delivered and made available to senior management and the Sales function.

What this demonstrates

  • Understanding of management information needs.
  • The ability to connect data, processes and decisions.
  • Development of clear tools for non-technical users.
  • Focus on information value rather than report production alone.

Business Intelligence is effective when it reduces the distance between available data and the decision that needs to be made.
